In the south of France, there is a wind known as the Mistral—a powerful, cold, and dry force that sweeps through the Rhône valley, heraldry of a changing season. It is a name synonymous with freedom and raw, unbridled energy. It is also the name Bugatti chose for the final chapter of its legendary W16 era. But for one loyal customer in Molsheim, the Mistral was not just a force of nature; it was a canvas for a deeply personal tribute.
At The Transport Journal, we often cover the machines that move the world, but rarely do we see a machine that moves the soul quite like the W16 Mistral ‘Caroline’. Created through Bugatti’s Sur Mesure program, this roadster is an ode from a father to his daughter, blending the peak of hypercar performance with the delicate grace of Haute Couture.
The Vision: From Petals to Performance
The journey of ‘Caroline’ began not with a set of technical specifications, but with an abstract vision rooted in the gentle beauty of flowers. The owner sought to imbue the aggressive, sculptural form of the W16 Mistral with an identity defined by delicacy.
Entrusted to Sabine Consolini and the Colour & Material Finish team, the project took the designers from the ateliers of Molsheim to the lavender fields of Provence and the meticulously curated gardens of Paris. They weren’t just looking for a colour; they were looking for an emotion.
The result is a bespoke ‘Lavender’ paintwork that defies a single description. Through a meticulous process of mixing and testing dozens of samples, the team achieved a tone that shifts with the light—oscillating between a bluish and reddish violet. It captures the ephemeral beauty of a flower in bloom, dancing across the car’s surfaces in a play of highlights and shadows. To ground this ethereal finish, the lower body is sculpted in exposed ‘Violet Carbon’ weave, providing a deep, technical contrast to the luminous paint above.

A Canvas in the Air
One of the most striking features of the Mistral is its retractable rear wing, which serves as a functional air brake for a car capable of reaching 420 km/h (261 mph). In the ‘Caroline,’ however, this wing doubles as a work of art.
When the air brake activates, it reveals a hand-painted floral composition of lilacs and irises. Each petal was defined with extraordinary precision using multiple masking foils and successive layers of colour. At the very centre of this floral arrangement, the name ‘Caroline’ is inscribed in Bugatti’s signature script, anchoring the entire creation to the person it honours.
The Sanctuary of the Cockpit
Stepping inside the ‘Caroline’ is like entering a garden of leather and light. The interior is a harmonious interplay of ‘Blanc’ (white) and ‘Minuit’ (dark blue) leather, accented by rich violet tones and more ‘Violet Carbon’.
The floral narrative continues through intricate embroidery. Each headrest features a mirrored, hand-stitched floral motif composed of thousands of threads. On the door panels, these petals appear to drift and flow as if carried by the wind—a subtle nod to the Mistral name itself.
At the centre of the cabin lies a quiet link to Bugatti’s heritage. The gear selector houses a sculpture of Rembrandt Bugatti’s iconic ‘Dancing Elephant’, encased in glass tinted to match the violet palette. It is a reminder that while this car looks toward the future, its soul is firmly rooted in a century of artistry.

The Heart of the Beast
Beneath the hand-stitched leather and lavender paint lies the most ambitious automotive powertrain ever created: the 8.0-litre quad-turbo W16 engine.
As the final road-going model to feature this engine, the Mistral is a mechanical “swansong”. It produces a staggering 1,600 PS (1,578 hp), allowing it to rocket from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.4 seconds. Because the Mistral is a dedicated roadster—with no fixed roof—the experience is amplified by two massive air intakes directly behind the occupants’ heads. At full throttle, these intakes gulp 70,000 litres of air every minute, creating an intake roar and turbocharger “whistle” that Bugatti describes as an unmatched aural sensation.
A Legacy in Motion
With only 99 units ever produced—all of which were pre-sold at a price of approximately €5 million (~$5.4 million) before options—the W16 Mistral is already a piece of history.
The ‘Caroline’ stands out even among this elite group. It is the perfect expression of the Sur Mesure philosophy: a fusion of Bugatti’s savoir-faire and a customer’s unique story. As Hendrik Malinowski, Managing Director of Bugatti, noted, transforming such a personal dream into reality is the highest level of the marque’s craft.
The W16 Mistral ‘Caroline’ is more than just the fastest roadster in the world; it is a father’s love letter, written in carbon fibre, lavender, and the sound of sixteen cylinders. It is a reminder that in the world of transport, sometimes the most important journey is the one that brings us closer to family.
