Lexus, the luxury brand of Toyota has launched their self charging Hybrid SUV the RX 450hL in India. The Lexus RX450 hL is powered by a 3.5 litre BS 6 petrol engine coupled to an electric motor. The car is distinctly recognisable as a Lexus thanks to the spindle shaped grille which dominates the front of the car and the arrow shaped headlamps typical of Lexus.

The RX 450hL was initially introduced in 1998 and the present car is the fourth generation of the vehicle. This car has been provided with a theater style three rows of seating. There are strong character lines on the outside which give a muscular mess-with-me-not looks to the car. Inside, the RX 450hL features a new touch screen in addition to the Lexus-original remote touch interface. Smartphone usage has been incorporated into the design in the form of a new phone holder and USB port. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity is a given in this segment. The system also allows voice control via native cloud connection, or through Apple Siri or Google Assistant. There is also an option to either select Lexus navigation or smartphone versions for navigating.

The 3.5 litre engine is a V-6 running on the Atkinson cycle offering class leasing fuel efficiency. The ride and handling of the vehicle have been improved through use of advanced manufacturing techniques including hot-stamping, extensive use of spot welds and body adhesives and laser screw welding. The car body is made up of light weight high tensile steel and Aluminium. This has lightened the body and made it stiff and rigid for an exhilarating driving experience. RX features Active Cornering Assist (ACA) which results in a truly linear steering feel, allowing the RX to accurately trace the desired driving line in all types of conditions. The redesigned RX’s shock absorbers are now equipped with a new Friction Control Device (FCD) which further reduces high- frequency vibrations caused by minute road surface imperfections. The shock absorbers also enable the RX to conduct flat cornering and achieve exceptional responsiveness.

Speaking on the launch, P B Venugopal, President, Lexus India, said “RX 450hL is a self-charging hybrid electric vehicle that offers luxury, space, quietness, craftsmanship and elevates the senses with every moment of the journey. The improved technology, design and attractive pricing will surely make RX 450hL a desirable car for our discerning guests. We take the introduction of the new RX as our continued commitment to the Indian market and a valued addition to our existing line of offerings.”

The Lexus RX 450hL is available at a price of INR 99.0 Lakhs (US$ 137,500) ex-showroom in Delhi.
