Bajaj Chetak was an icon of its time. A scooter most middle class Indian kids born in the seventies and eighties would remember growing up with. After Baja Auto decided to concentrate completely on bikes, the Chetak was given a silent burial. However, Bajaj has decided to reintroduce the scooter, but as a pure battery electric vehicle. It will be sold through Bajaj’s premium pro-bike chain of dealerships which sell the premium bike offerings.
The scooter is powered by an IP67 rated high tech Lithium-ion batteries and has a sport and eco mode. In the sport mode the scooter has a range of 85 km which is extended by the eco mode by another 10 km to 95 km. The scooter has also been provided with driver assists like reverse assist mode. Bajaj Auto has provided the scooter with embedded mobility solutions like data communication, security and user authentication.
The Chetak has horse show shaped LED headlights with DRLs, electronic switches and sequential scrolling LED indicators. A large digital console displays vehicle information to the rider. The Chetak is expected to be launched in January in Pune and Bengaluru. Further spread the bike will depend on the response in these two markets.
