Horses have played an important role in defining performance cars. Afetr the prancing horse on a Ferrari, Ford decided to give birth to another horse, a galloping one this time; in 1964. The Ford Mustang, first of the pony cars was an outright hit and continues to be an iconic model from Ford. Keeping up with the changing times and increased popularity of SUVs as well as the increasing interest in electric mobility, Ford has launched the latest avatar of the Mustang; the mustang Mach-E. The Mach-E is a sporty five seat coupe shaped electric SUV. It has stayed true to the Mustang keeping the basic shape of the car, a long bonnet, triple slash tail lamps and angry headlamps. The body silhouette follows the shape of the Ford Mustang Coupe. The SUV also retains the most important aspect of the Mustang, performance.

Ford is offering the Mustang in three states, the normal Mustang, the GT and the GT Performance. All these models are available with either the 75.7 KW-H standard range or the 989.8 KW-H extended range batteries. The extended range batteries increase the range of the car to a very respectable 480 km (300 miles). The cars are either available with rear wheel drive or four wheel drive. In all the models, the Mustang Mach-E is powered by permanent sync AC motors. The normal Ford Mustang Mach-E produces 332 BHP and 565 N-M of torque. This setup is sufficient to push the car from 0-60 mph (96 km/h) in less than 4 seconds which is claimed to be faster than the Porsche Macan. On the other hand, motors on the GT and GT Performance cars produce 459 BHP and 830 N-m of torque. These cars can do a 0-60 mph in mid 3 seconds, taking it into Porsche 911 GTS category. To stop the car, Ford has fitted Brembo’s all-new performance Flexira aluminum calipers, which maintain the functionality of a fixed caliper while being designed with the dimensions of a floating caliper. The GT Performance Edition on the other side is equipped with a MagneRide damping system, which is an adaptive suspension technology that lets drivers hug the road while delivering an exciting, comfortable ride.

Ford has used the excess space released by use of electric propulsion intelligently in consultation with the customers. Hence, the car offers two boots, one at the backs and a drainable one under the hood. As this boot can be drained, it can be used to hold ice and act as a cooler for drink. The battery pack is installed below the deck of the car and hence liberates enough space for friends, kids and their luggage inside. The car comes with fully digital instrumentation. However, the center of attraction inside is the 15.5″ infotainment system display. This display has been loaded with AI and Machine Learning to allow it to learn the nature and bahaviour of the driver and suggest options which may be closer to the driver’s liking. The various menus in the infotainment system have been replaced with intuitive controls like touch, swipe and pinch controls. Something which every smart phone user if familiar with.

The Ford Mustang Mach-E comes with a digital personal assistant which will suggest actions based on the behavioural pattern of the driver. Further, the system is updated over-the-air. Entertainment is provided through a Bang and Olufsen music system while a special IR protective glass roof keeps the cabin cool in summers and warm in winters. The car connects to the driver’s smart phone with bluetooth and unlocks the car as well allows her to start the car without using a key. What happens if the phone goes dead? Well Ford has thought around that also. Every car comes with a unique code which can be keyed into, to start the car. Ford also offers a service called the FordPass Charging Network along with the Ford Mustang Mach-E. This service gives Ford owners access to one of the largest charging networks in the USA comprising more than 12,500 charging stations. The system also guides the driver to the nearest charging station when required.

Though the Ford Mustang Mach-E comes with a 230V slow charger, a fast DC charger can add 47 miles of range in 10 minutes.
