For 90 years, the ŠKODA vocational school in Mladá Boleslav has been training apprentices in the art and science of building cars. Since 2014, the company has started giving the students a unique chance to design and build their own concept car under the guidance of the Skoda Design Team. 2020 is the seventh year when a group of students will come up with a new concept which shall be officially named and displayed to the public in June 2020.

As part of the training, the students are permitted to see over the shoulders of the Skoda Design Team and its chief designer Oliver Stefani at work. This hands on training is priceless. Once introduced to the concepts and methods of designing a car, the students are tasked with designing their own concept. This time over, the students are developing an open top spider version of the new compact car, the Skoda Scala. The whole process starts with hand drawn concepts despite the invasion of computer based design and simulation software. Through out the period, the students will be hand held by Oliver Stefani and his team.

The Skoda Scala is a compact car which was introduced by Skoda in 2018 and plays an important role in the Czech manufacturer’s product range. The students aim to clean up the lines of the car and give it a more emotive appeal through the open top shape.
